Why Varadero

The name of this municipality showed up as a consequence of the crafts which earlier in time, accidentally stranded in its fine sands. The Hicacos Península is the most northern point of firm land in Cuba, where the tourist pole is located and the Santa Martha and Boca de Camarioca settlements.
The social and economic activity is basically based on tourism, which faces a steady and increasing growth now and it was exploited as such since the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, when Varadero was considered a resort. It was separated from Cárdenas and created as a municipality in 1976, due to its exceptional natural conditions; it is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches worldwide.
At the end of the 1920 decade, Varadero begins to be known in the North American market, from the hand of the multimillionaire Irenee Du Pont, and from the 30 decade, it constituted the vacational tours of Cuban high classes.
This wonderful tourist pole today, besides receiving together with Havana City the 70 % of the whole visitors arriving in Cuba, counts with numerous options to satisfy the preferences of the whole tourists visiting us, furthermore , Varadero has an international airport for everybody’s comfort.
Among the greatest qualities of this incredible beach, we have its very fine sands and clear waters of surprising blue spectrum, ideal for the enjoyment of all nautical and recreational sports (with or without engine) and specially for scuba diving, since it has 32 places for sea exploration in a zone delimited by Matanzas Bay and the western side of the Jardines del Rey archipelago.
Scenarios greatly praised by the divers are the ones found at the Sea park in Cayo Piedras del Norte, first and sole attraction of its kind which occupies an area of nearly two nautical square miles and the so called bluehole, Ojo del Mégano, a huge cave located at the reefs near the Bay of Cadiz (near the limits with Villa Clara).
Ships’ fragments intentionally sunken in this area since 1996, which is located some eight nautical miles to the north best of the beach, and where you may go as a professional diver or as an amateur: a tour yatch with forty meters breadth; a passenger plane AN-24; an engine boat; a frigate with 102 meters of length and a tug are the relics comprising the interesting scenario.
A different proposal for the tourists is the ecological reserve, Punta Hicacos: here you may know first hand about the mysterious stories of the Ambrosio’s and the Muslim’s Caves, where there are dozens of attractive aborigine pictographies; to go through the natural history to warn the presence of the Patriarca, a cactus with more than 600 years of age and getting closer to the Mangón lagoon, a water reservoir where 662 birds and reptiles species have been identified.
Other of the enchantments of the city is the countless of sites where you can spend the night incredibly well and some of them are : The Varadero Golf Club, unique professional Golf Field on the island with 18 holes pair 72; an international centre for parachutes launching, dozens of excursions on board sailing ships and catamarans to the northern keys; bathing with the dolphins at the aquarium; tours in aquaray through the south channels; the possibility of organizing an attractive encounter at the Conventions’ Centre, Plaza América, or enjoying from the services of the green lung of the resort, Josone park, all this will make your stay like a dream come true.
