The present Varadero municipality is located at the north of Matanzas province, being the smallest one with respect to territorial extension. It limits with Cardenas Bay at the south. It has a length of 30 square kilometres and 22.5 are of beaches.

Varadero is divided in two Popular Councils now, Santa Marta - Boca de Camarioca and the Hicacus peninsula. Its most northern point is a fishing town called Las Morlas.
