This popular belief is based on the fact that many times in the rest of Cuba the climatic situation is not very good, and in Varadero the sun is out and the sky is blue.

The general characteristics of the weather in Cuba are those of tropical countries, with a rainy season in the summer. Cuba’s tropical weather is quite humid and it has a coastal influence. The sun is out during most of the year, so you can pick any month and any season to visit Varadero. Nevertheless, the best months for taking beach and sun baths are from April to October. However, a lot of tourists feel that the sun and the heat in these months are too much, and that’s why the months in which Cuba has its high tourist season are from November to March, approximately. There’s a short, not so harsh winter in Cuba that lasts precisely during those months, but you will discover that not all of these days are cold and, in fact, many of them resemble summer days.

The temperatures in Varadero usually oscillate around the 25ºC and 35ºC, though they can be lower in the winter as we already said. In the hottest months of the year (July and August) the temperatures can be quite challenging and they may reach up to 35ºC, however, the high humidity present in Varadero’s atmosphere (which is most of the time about the 80 percent) the heat feels much worse than it really is and people sweat a lot, so it is advisable that if you are coming to Varadero at that time of the year, you drink plenty of liquids so that you don’t dehydrate. Also, during this period, due to the high temperatures and, consequently, the fast evaporation of water, rain is frequent in the afternoons. Mostly, the rain is quick and not torrential; nevertheless, sometimes it may get a little annoying and become a small storm, so you may want to carry an umbrella with you.

The water in Varadero’s marvelous beaches is a little bit colder in the mornings (about 25ºC), but by noon its temperature is very nice, and by the end of the day (at nights) the water is actually warm. Yet, if you go to the beaches during winter you may find that, some days, the water is going to be cold all day long.

For being part of a tropical island, Varadero has to deal with tropical cyclones (depressions, storms, and hurricanes), which are really destructive natural phenomena. The cyclonic season in Cuba lasts from June 1st to November 30th; however, history says that the most dangerous month when it comes to hurricanes is October.

Spending a cyclone in Varadero (and in Cuba in general) is quite safe, because many safety measures are taken by the authorities so that people are not hurt. All the hotels are built and equipped to resist these phenomena. As well, the information is given to the population and, of course, the tourists, with enough time so that they can get ready and regular weather reports are showed on TV and the press. In addition, the steps and measures to be taken when these events are affecting the Island are communicated to the tourists by the management of the hotel they are staying in or by the owner of the house in which they are. As Varadero is an extremely coastal town, many hotels are evacuated and others are conditioned to resist the event.
